Top New Video Game Releases On Switch, PS4, Xbox One, And PC This Month — April 2020

It’s crazy to think that we’re already a quarter of the way through 2020, and the new month has another batch of video games to feast on. April brings us some sizzling hot remakes: the survival horror outing Resident Evil 3, the sword-slashing tale of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and the reimagined retro RPG Trials of Mana. Movie fans can also get a taste of nostalgia with Predator: Hunting Grounds, and the Gears of War crowd gets a new strategy-heavy campaign with Gears Tactics.

Resident Evil 3 — April 3

Available on: PS4, Xbox One, PC

Resident Evil 3 is getting the same treatment as 2019’s Resident Evil 2 remake, which is appropriate since the two games overlap. RE 3 sees Jill Valentine exploring a zombie-filled Raccoon City, where she and other S.T.A.R.S. agents are being hunted down by the nasty Nemesis. That’s just the single-player component–this remake also includes Resident Evil Resistance, an asymmetrical multiplayer mode. Four players control survivors, while a fifth mastermind tries to take them out with zombies, Lickers, Tyrants, and all sorts of tricks and traps.

Final Fantasy VII Remake — April 10

Available on: PS4

Final Fantasy 7’s remake is also coming this month–well, part of it. This particular release only tells Cloud’s story through the Midgar story arc, but Square Enix says the side quests and other content still makes the game size comparable to that of other mainline Final Fantasy titles. Combat in the remake has also been reimagined. It plays out in real time, but when your ATB gauge fills, you can pause the action to select items, cast magic, and pull off special attacks.

Predator: Hunting Grounds — April 24

Available on: PS4, Xbox One, PC

Resident Evil 3 isn’t the only asymmetrical experience coming this month. Hunting Grounds pits four player-controlled soldiers against a lone Predator player. They can choose to hunt the fireteam as a Scout, Hunter, or Berserker Predator, each with their own abilities and alien weapons. The soldiers also have their own classes and loadouts, which they’ll need if they hope to complete their objectives and survive in the jungle.

Trials of Mana — April 24

Available on: PS4, PC, Switch

The original Trials of Mana first launched in 1995, but it never came to the West until recently. While the action-RPG has been fully recreated in 3D, you’ll still carry out battles in real time in the field. Trials features six characters, each with their own stories that weave together. You form a party of three at the start, so you’ll have to replay the adventure to see all parts of the story.

Gears Tactics — April 28

Available on: PC

Gears Tactics turns the Gears of War shooter formula into a tactics game, giving you a squad of customizable COGs who will carry out your orders against the Locust. It’s not just cannon fodder they’ll be facing, though: expect to encounter big Brumaks and Corpsers during the campaign too. Tactics is coming Game Pass for PC on launch day, but the Xbox One version will launch sometime later.

This episode of New Releases looks at April overall, but next time we’ll take a closer look at some weekly releases. New Pokemon Sword & Shield Isle Of Armor Expansion Details Revealed

Nintendo capped off its recent Nintendo Direct Mini presentation with some new information about Pokemon Sword and Shield. In particular, the company revealed more details about the games’ first expansion, Isle of Armor, which is currently slated to arrive this June.

Isle of Armor is set on the eponymous island, which lies off the coast of the Galar region. The isle is home to a Pokemon dojo where aspiring trainers learn under the tutelage of Mustard, the longest-reigning Pokemon Champion in Galar’s history and Leon’s former mentor.

When you arrive at the dojo, you’re gifted the Legendary Pokemon Kubfu from Mustard himself. As part of your training, you will eventually be able to challenge the Towers of Two Fists–the Tower of Darkness and the Tower of Waters. You can only challenge one of the towers, however, and the one you choose will influence how Kubfu evolves.

If you challenge the Tower of Darkness, Kubfu will evolve into Urshifu Single Strike Style, a Fighting/Dark Pokemon; if you complete the Tower of Waters, Kubfu will evolve into Urshifu Rapid Strike Style, and its typing will be Fighting/Water.

Additionally, the evolved form of your starter Pokemon in Sword and Shield–Rillaboom, Cinderace, or Inteleon–will be able to gain a Gigantamax form through the Isle of Armor. Each of these will have a special Gigantamax move. Rillaboom is able to use G-Max Drum Solo; Cinderace can unleash G-Max Fireball; and Inteleon fires off G-Max Hydro Snipe. Each of these attacks is stronger than typical Dynamax moves and ignores the opponent Pokemon’s abilities.

The Isle of Armor expansion also introduces new outfits, hairstyles, and customization options for your League Card. If you purchase the Expansion Pass before August 31, you’ll also get another free bonus: clothing items for your trainer based on Leon’s cap and tights.

The Isle of Armor is slated to launch by the end of June. However, Nintendo noted that any release dates announced during the presentation could be subject to change due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

In other Pokemon news, a new Max Raid event has begun in Sword and Shield. Pokemon Sword players are more likely to encounter Gigantamax versions of Copperajah and Duraludon in Max Raids, while Shield players are more likely to find Gigantamax Charizard and Garbodor.

New Details On The Lord Of The Rings MMO, Including Its Art Style, Have Emerged

As part of Amazon’s gigantic push into gaming, the company is developing a new Lord of the Rings MMO with developers who previously worked on Destiny, WoW, and Planetside, among others. The game is in development at the company’s Irvine, California studio, and now some of the first details about the game have emerged thanks to job listings.

A job ad for a senior character artist on the Lord of the Rings project calls for a person who will help create what sounds like a new art style for the game. The listing states, “We’re seeking an art style for our game that is ‘different-at-a-glance’ from the games and movies that have come before us.”

The listing goes on: “We need an artist with bravery and artistic skills to help us do something new.”

The successful candidate will work with the game’s designers and engineers to develop “fascinating heroes, unsettling enemies, and breathtaking cinematic characters in a variety of settings.”

Another job ad, for a gameplay UI engineer, calls for a person who will help develop the Lord of the Rings MMO’s “many social and gameplay features.” This person will assist with the creation of “nearly every player-facing feature in the game.”

The candidate will create features that help players want to play together, reward them for their in-game efforts, and motivate them to keep playing. Being a live service game, the Lord of the Rings MMO’s gameplay UI engineer will also “face the challenge of live game feature development where delighting customers is a constant occupation.”

The job listing also confirms something quite obvious, that the Lord of the Rings MMO will incorporate some of Amazon’s services, including GameLift and Twitch, though the exact nature of this was not disclosed.

A job ad for a senior environment artist also mentions the “different-at-a-glance” art style for the Lord of the Rings game. This person will also help to “bring innovative gameplay to life in functional, beautiful spaces.”

Yet another job, for a lead animator on the Lord of the Rings MMO, calls for a person who will help create the “foundations of navigation, combat, and storytelling.”

“We think ‘moment-to-moment fun’ is the highest goal of any game,” Amazon said. “Core gameplay must be delightful in its own right, even before adding extrinsic rewards and progression. We need an animator with the vision and clarity to achieve this goal.”

The job ad also points out that the Lord of the Rings MMO is aiming to be “AAA quality,” and that the person who gets the job will have “a broad impact and a lot of discretion.” The successful candidate will help develop a “combat loop” that feels “incredibly satisfying to play.”

The senior animator will also work with the creative director and narrative design to “express storytelling through in-game cinematics”

Another job, for the game’s art director, seeks a person who will help create and establish a “world class art team” to “produce breathtaking visuals” for the Lord of the Rings MMO.

“You will embed deeply with game teams to shape a unique visual style, innovate with new techniques and technologies, introduce production practices to empower artists and improve efficiency, and leverage lighting and rendering to deliver an impactful final result,” the job ad says.

Amazon’s new Lord of the Rings game is based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings literary trilogy–the books, not the movies–so it may feature some familiar faces. However, no story details are available at this stage, though Amazon did confirm that this project–which has no release date–is separate from Amazon’s Lord of the Rings TV show. That program takes place in the Second Age, which is long before the events of the books.

“The game will give fans around the globe a new, immersive game experience for epic exploration of the vast world of Tolkien,” Amazon said in a press release.

The wording in the new Lord of the Rings MMO job ads seems to suggest that it is still very early days for the project. The untitled Lord of the Rings MMO is being made for console and PC, and Amazon will market and publish the game everywhere in the world except China. Amazon is partnering with Warframe owner Leyou’s new Athlon Games division, which will handle the game’s release in China.

The game is being developed by the same internal Amazon studio that’s working on its 17th Century MMO New World. People working on the Lord of the Rings game include veterans who worked on big online games such as Destiny, Planetside, WoW, Everquest, Defiance, and Rift.

Amazon’s Lord of the Rings MMO will seemingly compete directly with the existing Lord of the Rings MMO, The Lord of the Rings Online, which launched all the way back in 2007, and is also based on the books, not the movies. The game is still in operation to this day, though its ownership has changed hands. The Lord of the Rings Online never made the jump to console, however, while Amazon plans to release its game on console. Amazon’s game has no release date, which suggests it’s not coming soon. That means it could potentially release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, though this is only conjecture.

Middle-earth Enterprises, which controls the non-literary rights to Tolkien’s work, is involved with Amazon’s new game.

In addition to this new MMO, Daedelic Entertainment is making a Lord of the Rings game that focuses on Gollum.

Two New Limited-Time Borderlands 3 Events Start Today

A new update for Borderlands 3 will introduce not one but two new events, as the legendary vending machine limited-time event rotates out of play. That event, which made legendary loot available in vending machines, will end and be replaced by Slot Machine Mania and Trials Take-All.

According to hotfix notes, Slot Machine Mania will increase your chance to win legendaries from slot machines, but also increases the chances for grenades to spawn instead. Less valuable loot still might appear, but those odds have been greatly reduced. The other event, Trials Take-All, boosts the chances of rewards during Proving Ground trials, and bosses will always drop loot from their pools. Both events start today and will last until April 9 at 9 AM PT.

This follows closely after the release of Guns, Love, and Tentacles, the second major expansion for the game. That introduces a Lovecraftian threat in the midst of a happy wedding ceremony, though it doesn’t really explore some of Lovecraft’s problematic aspects. The patch that introduced the DLC also raised the level cap to 57, which Gearbox says will greatly increase the end-game power level by allowing players to use two capstone skills instead of just one.

If you don’t happen to have Borderlands 3 yet, it’s part of the big PSN sale going on now. That will let you grab it for $30, while the Xbox One version is $20 at Amazon. Meanwhile, both Target and Amazon are hosting buy two, get one free sales, which should let you catch up on any games you may have missed recently.

New High-End Gaming Laptops Revealed By MSI

MSI has revealed its upcoming slate of gaming laptops, which all come equipped with 10th-gen Intel Core processors and Nvidia RTX Super graphics cards. The new laptops include the GS66 Stealth, GE66 Raider, and Creator 17. The company states that these laptops were made with gamers and content creators in mind, with specs that can easily handle tasks like gaming and rendering high-quality video.

The GS66 Stealth is available now for pre-order, while the GE66 Raider and Creator 17 laptops will launch online on April 15. Each laptop comes with a TN display with the option to switch out for an IPS-level panel, which provides brighter and better colours.

GS66 Stealth gaming laptop

Starting at $1,599; Available for pre-order now

The GS66 Stealth has a discrete look with an all-black chassis, making it more low-key than most gaming laptops. It can boast up to an i9-10980HK processor with an RTX Super graphics card. Whichever specs you choose, you’ll get a 15.6-inch, 1080p display with a 300Hz refresh rate. Pairing an i9-10980HK with an RTX 2080 Super should produce some impressive results on that 300Hz display. It also comes with two NVMe SSD slots and a per-key RGB-lit gaming keyboard by SteelSeries as well as a Cooler Boost Trinity+ cooling system and a 99.9Whr battery.

GE66 Raider gaming laptop

Starting at $1,799 on April 15

The GE66 Raider looks more like a gaming laptop than the GS66 Stealth, though it doesn’t stand out as particularly garish. It features the same range of specs as the GS66 Stealth as well, including up to an i9-10980HK processor and RTX 2080 Super as well as the 15.6-inch, 1080p display with the 300Hz refresh rate. It’s all supported by the same 99.9Whr battery and same RGB-lit keyboard. It also boasts an RGB light display on the front of the laptop’s base.

Creator 17 gaming laptop

Starts at $1,799 on April 15

MSI’s Creator 17 laptop is more focused on being a great workstation machine for video editors and producers–though it’s also capable of gaming. You can pair it with up to an i7-10875H processor and an RTX Super series graphics card. It features a 17.3-inch, 4K display that’s MiniLED-lit and HDR 1000-capable. It also comes with a white backlit keyboard.

Here’s What The New PS3 Update Does

Granted, it’s not the most exciting update of all time, but the important thing is that PS3 is still getting them. The iconic console has still got it.

When it comes to Sony’s long-running gaming brand, nobody really has eyes for anything other than the PS5 right now. Things are heating up on that front, as the company continues to drip-feed exciting new details about their upcoming console.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X are still locked in a vicious battle of petty one-upmanship, and fans are declaring their allegiance to one or the other. In short, it’s business as usual when a new console generation is on the horizon. Nintendo, meanwhile, continues to largely ignore their squabbling rivals and do their usual Nintendo thing, which is also par for the course.

The relentless march of coronavirus continues to throw a spanner in the works and leave release dates and such in doubt (although PS5 is still on track, Sony has stated) but that’s the situation as we understand it at the moment. With all of that said, then, maybe we’re concentrating a little too hard on the hype surrounding the new consoles. The older ones are alive and kicking, as PS3’s latest update has emerged out of the woodwork to prove.

The PS3 launched way back in 2006. It had a heck of a job on its hands, following up the best-selling console of all time, but it had a remarkable run of its own. It was finally discontinued in Japan in 2017, with a string of fantastic exclusives like Demon’s Souls and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots to its name. Even now, in 2020, it’s still (barely) alive and kicking, having just been updated to version 4.86.

The big question, of course, is what does this update do? The little answer, sadly, is not very much at all. As Multiplayer First reports, the update notes simply read “this system software update improves the quality of the system performance,” which is about as exciting as Nintendo’s infamous ‘stability’ updates for the 3DS. To add insult to injury, version 4.86 sneakily removes a feature that PS3 had: the ability to message PS4 And PS Vita. Still, it may just be an anti-hacking measure or something of that nature, but it’s nice to be reminded that the PS3 is still a thing nonetheless.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Bunny Day event guide

Animal Crossing: New Horizons on Switch is having its first live event: Bunny Day. The event takes place from April 1-12.

To start the event, look for the yellow rabbit, Zipper T. Bunny, roaming around your island. He’ll task you with finding hidden eggs and recipes all over the island. They’ll be buried in the ground and in bodies of water to be fished up (among other places). The eggs you find can be crafted into limited-time items to decorate your home or island with. If you find and create all the recipes, he’ll give you a special reward.

Note that to participate in this event, your Nintendo Switch will need to be synced to real time. You cannot time travel to access this event, as the game will check online if you’re synced up.

How to find eggs

You can find eggs by digging them up, shaking them off trees like fruit, hitting them out from rocks, fishing, and many other methods. Different methods yield different specific eggs:

  • Earth Egg: digging up from the ground (like fossils)
  • Stone Egg: hit from rocks (like Stones and Iron Nuggets)
  • Leaf Egg: shaken from out of trees (like fruit)
  • Wood Egg: hit out of trees (like wood)
  • Sky Egg: shot out of colorful, striped balloons
  • Water Egg: fish them out of water

If the event ends and you’re only a few eggs away from completing all the furnishings, don’t fret. Zipper T. will trade eggs on the last day, April 12. He’ll give you any specific egg you need in exchange for three of another type of egg.

How to get recipes for Bunny furniture

You’ll find recipes for Bunny items washed up on shore in striped, colorful messages in bottles. There’s also balloons in the sky, decorated with stripes. Residents will also share recipes with you.

After collecting a certain number of each egg type, your character will be inspired to make fashion items inspired by them. After learning all of the different types of fashion items, you’ll learn the recipe for an Egg Party Hat and Egg Party Dress.

Zipper T. Bunny will give you the recipe for the Bunny Day Bed the first time you talk to him. He’ll give you the recipe for the Bunny Day Arch on April 12, the last day of the event.

The Bunny Day Crown and Bunny Day Bag can only be obtained from your residents giving you them, according to this guide.

After you make everything, talk to Zipper T. on April 12 and he will give you a recipe to make a Wobbling Zipper Toy, which can be used to make a Bunny Day Wand. Show him the Wobbling Zipper Toy you make and he’ll give you the recipe for the wand.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons – What Is A Bell Voucher?

Bell Vouchers are an item that become available to Animal Crossing: New Horizons players upon opening the Resident Services building. They’re available through the Nook Stop terminal from then on. While its function is implicit in its name, exactly how the item works—and namely, how many Bells each Voucher is worth—can’t be gleaned without buying one first. For those hoping to save some Nook Miles before committing to the purchase, here’s exactly what the item does, and how to make them available in the first place.

Opening Resident Services

Bell Vouchers aren’t available until players open the Resident Services building first. This is one of the sequential tasks that provide a progression system for new players after starting the game, beginning with the first home loan payment. Resident Services will open, given that everything necessary beforehand is accomplished as soon as possible, on the eighth day of play. This follows your first home loan payment, opening the Nook’s Cranny shop, and welcoming three additional villagers onto your island.

After Resident Services has been opened (which means that Tom Nook’s tent has been converted into a full building) a host of new items will become available through the Nook Stop terminal.

Buying and Using Bell Vouchers

Bell Vouchers can be purchased on the upgraded Nook Stop terminal for 500 Nook Miles each. After progressing to this part of the game, accruing Nook Miles should have become a habit, but for those lacking Nook Miles, they’re rewarded for completing all sorts of mundane tasks that can be viewed in the Nook Miles app.

Each Bell Voucher can then be sold to Timmy and Tommy at Nook’s Cranny for 3,000 Bells. That’s their whole function—converting Nook Miles into cash. This equates to an exchange rate of one Nook Mile being worth six Bells.

That said, also available following the same Nook Stop terminal upgrade are a kaiju statue and a DIY plan for a giant mech, among other things, so converting Nook Miles into Bells may be far from your first priority once they become available. A year or years into the game, however, and these conversions very well may become second nature.
