Bloodstained’s $5M stretch goal ‘roguelike’ mode dropped for ‘randomizer’

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has been out since 2019, but players have been waiting on a promised “roguelike” mode for designer Koji Igarashi and developer ArtPlay’s crowdfunded game. But on Monday, Bloodstained publisher 505 Games announced the $5 million stretch goal won’t happen. Instead, players will have access to a new game mode called “Randomizer.”

Bloodstained’s game code — “created in the game’s early development” — was not compatible with roguelike gameplay, “especially a procedurally generated castle,” according to an update posted on Kickstarter.

It continued: “Due to this, we regret to announced that we will not be developing Roguelike as part of the project’s planned stretch goals. We know this is a mode that many of you were eagerly anticipating and we apologize that we will not be able to make it happen as planned.”

ArtPlay posted about its $5 million mode on June 11, 2015. And, indeed, Bloodstained fans seemed eager to see the mode added to the game; by the next day, the $5 million goal was reached.

The Randomizer mode will be free when it’s released. ArtPlay described it as “the story campaign you’re used to, but with a twist.” Players will be able to choose eight game parameters that’ll be randomized during a playthrough.

“As an example, ‘Items – Retain Method’ means that items will be found in the same spawn method (chest, mob drop, etc.) as normal,” ArtPlay said. “Items found in chests will still be found in chests, they will just get mixed around. ‘Total random’ means anything can drop anywhere.”

More details are expected at a later date. A release timeline wasn’t mentioned — just that it’ll come with Zangetsu.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is available now on Windows PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
