When Harry Redknapp, also known as The Gaffer, experienced “chest pains”, he made sure he was looked over by medical professionals. “About 10 years ago, I had chest pains and tests showed I had blocked arteries,” he revealed. “Now I’m one of the lucky ones as I got the warning signs, got a diagnosis, and got sorted out with an angioplasty and a couple of stents.”

Chest pain can be a sign of coronary (heart) artery disease, which can lead to a heart attack.

What’s an angioplasty?

The NHS explains: “A coronary angioplasty is a procedure used to widen blocked or narrowed coronary arteries.”

In other words, integrative medicine fellowship the surgical procedure involves a balloon that is used to stretch open the narrowed arteries that supply blood to the heart.

When the arteries supplying blood to the heart are narrowed, the heart muscle struggles to get the oxygen and nutrients it requires.

As such, chest pain ensues, and if the heart is starved of oxygen for long enough, a life-threatening heart attack occurs.

Nowadays, during an angioplasty, a short wire mesh tube, known as a stent, is placed into the artery during the procedure.

The NHS continues: “The stent is left in place permanently to allow blood to flow more freely.”

Redknapp cautioned: “But not everyone gets that chance. Many people are missing out on years of their life.

“Or living with pain and suffering that stops them having a decent quality of life.”

Coronary heart disease

The heart condition can lead to chest pain and breathlessness, but many people may overlook such symptoms.

The chest pain, for example, can be “mild”, or mistaken for indigestion, but it’s usually triggered by physical activity or feeling stressed.

As such, anybody experiencing any type of chest pain is recommended to visit their doctor.

Smoking, for instance, is one factor that can lead to narrowed arteries and heart disease.

Additional factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and not exercising regularly.

Obesity is another risk factor and having a family history of coronary heart disease.

In order to minimise your risk of coronary heart disease, you need to eat a “low-fat, high-fibre diet”.

This should include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and a limited amount of salt.

Regular exercise is also of paramount importance, with people recommended to do at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week to improve their health.

Harry Redknapp is on The Jonathan Ross Show, showcasing on ITV at 9pm on Saturday, November 5.
