Xbox To Receive AMD’s Performance Boosting FSR 2.0 Tech Alongside Nvidia GPUs

Last year, AMD revealed its Fidelity FX Super Resolution, a direct competitor to Nvidia's performance-boosting DLSS technology. But where DLSS required specific machine-learning hardware built into its GPUs, AMD's Fidelity FX Super Resolution (hereby shortened to FSR) didn't need any of that fancy stuff. It just tapped into GPU's hardware to enable a simpler algorithm that helped present crisp, clear images at a faster frame rate.

The benefit to AMD's solution was that it wasn't limited to Nvidia's graphics cards, so it could work on stuff like the Xbox Series X|S and even the handheld Steam Deck. Now at GDC 2022, AMD has unveiled Fidelity FX Super Resolution 2.0 (FSR 2.0) promising even higher framerates, better picture quality, and best of all, it can even be used on competing hardware.

That's right: even Nvidia graphics cards take advantage of FSR 2.0. AMD released a chart that revealed even cards as old as the GTX 1070 can stand to benefit from the frame-boosting software, provided the game supports it. More recent video cards, such as the RTX 3070 and the Radeon RX 6700 XT, will even be able to output smooth gameplay at 4K resolutions.

Xbox will also receive FSR 2.0, although the exact time frame for when games will support this new technology and when it might be rolled out to Xbox's consoles is still a bit up in the air. AMD FSR 2.0 will be launched in Q2 2022, with Deathloop and Forspoken being the first games to implement it (even though Forspoken isn't due out until October now).

This could be a real game-changer. Nvidia has enjoyed dominance of the PC GPU market thanks in large part to hitting the market first with next-gen tech like ray tracing and DLSS, but if FSR 2.0 can offer the same performance-boosting power as DLSS without even needing a DLSS-capable card, it's hard to imagine why game developers would choose to implement DLSS when FSR 2.0 works just as well on way more hardware.
