Worms celebrates 25 years with fan-made update for Worms Armageddon
Those unhappy with the newly announced Worms battle royale game can enjoy a fan-made update to the more traditional Worms Armageddon.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Worms series of turn-based tactical games and celebrations began with the announcement of a new entry, Worms Rumble.
Unlike previous games, though, Worms Rumble is a real-time battle royale title and it wasn’t received entirely well by fans who feel that it’s too far removed from the series’ roots.
Those disappointed may be placated by another announcement, one related to a more traditional Worms game, Worms Armageddon, which is a receiving a brand-new update, which developer Team 17 describes as being fan-made.
Some of the new features include computer opponents appearing in online matches, the ability to affect the game’s physics, the option for players to compete on maps that have already been ravaged by a previous battle, and improved compatibility between Windows 10 and Linux platforms.
‘I’m thankful to have been able to play some part in the Worms story over the past twenty years,’ says creative director Kevin Carthew.
‘Worms: Armageddon was among the first games I worked on; it’s incredible that members of the community are still delivering updates for it and is a sure sign of its quality and the love that fans have for it.’
Carthew also mentions that tens of thousands of players have signed up for the Worms Rumble beta, which is running until 20 July, so it’s clear that there are plenty of fans willing to try the game out, despite the backlash its announcement received.
Worms Armageddon is available on PC via Steam.
