Streamer Shroud Says That Streaming Is Not Work
Streamer and former esports champion Shroud was asked by a follower during a session on December 6, 2021 if he has any plans for coming back to the world of professional gaming. The response was that he probably never will because “working sucks.”
“You guys got to realize. I don’t like work. That’s why I stream,” Shroud said. “I don’t like work. Working sucks. So, if there’s anything that requires some work and some effort, I’m probably not going to do it.”
When a follower pointed out that streaming itself constitutes work, Shroud was quick to question whether or not this was in fact the case. “Streaming is work? No, it’s not fucking work — it’s a god damned joke,” he argued. “Look, I’m sitting here doing nothing. I’m literally doing nothing.”
The streamer went on to say that he barely even considers the merchandise line which he manages to count as any kind of real work. “That wasn’t a lot of work for me, though. I just choose. A lot of mock-ups were drawn and I said ‘yes’ or I said ‘no.’ That’s not really a lot of work,” he noted.
Shroud was a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive player with Cloud9 from 2014 to 2018. He started his merchandise line around the same time that he turned to streaming which is to say shortly after going into retirement from professional gaming. He apparently has barely worked a single day in the last four years.
The streamer was probably not attempting to be controversial, but his remarks come in the middle of an ongoing conversation about whether or not streaming should be considered a form of work. Streamers have been increasingly open about the difficulties involved in this activity. Shroud is one of only a few big league streamers to come down so decisively on this side of the debate.
Shroud has a Twitch channel with over 9 million followers which is listed as one of the most popular on the platform. He also has a YouTube channel with almost 7 million subscribers. His videos have racked up over 500 million views on Twitch and 800 million views on YouTube.
