RuneScape Developer Raised Nearly £500,000 For Mental Health Charities In 2020
Over the course of 2020, Jagex – the studio behind RuneScape – managed to raise £445,778 for mental health charities. This includes organizations such as CPSL Mind, Prince’s Trust, Rise Above The Disorder, SpecialEffect, Blueprint for All and even The National Videogame Museum.
RuneScape has held a special Mental Health Awareness Week every year since 2018. These events gave players a chance to learn more about mental health, bring awareness to various charities engaged in promoting mental health, and earn a few exclusive items in the process. Jagex went all-out his year, holding a “two-week long extravaganza” focused on subject, which ran during the first half of October.
That event – along with subsequent promotions from Jagex – seem to have paid off. Earlier today the company reported that it had raised nearly £500,000 for various mental health charities. “We’re delighted to announce that Jagex raised £445,778 this year for our mental health charity partners,” reads its statement.
It’s been a strong year for RuneScape, and the game is almost more popular now than any time in its history. Between content drops, rolling out RuneScape on Steam, and keeping the Old School spin-off updated, Jagex has seen strong numerous throughout 2020. RuneScape is currently sitting with a “Very Positive” rating on Steam, with over 10,000 reviews. Old School is expected to hit the service sometime in 2021.
Best of all, we’re glad to see the game’s success translate to increased support for its mental health partners.
Next year marks RuneScape’s 20th anniversary, and big plans are in store for players over the next few months. We had a chance to connect with the developers and pick their brains about the past, present, and future of the MMO. Check back in the coming weeks to read the full interview.
Until then, you’ll be able to take part in the Grand Party on January 4. Details about the event are still tightly under wraps, but we only have a few days left until the festivities begin. Here’s to an even better 2021, and one that’s even more charitable than the last.
