While both the PS5 and Xbox Series dish out similar rates of power and performance, they boast different features.
And right now, the Xbox Series X and Game Pass combo has proven to be a huge hit during its first year on shelves.
And while the tech giant has not overtaken Sony’s PS5 yet in terms of sales, it’s clear that the PlayStation console needs something to counteract it.
And news this week that Sony could be working on a massive Virtual Reality upgrade for the PS5 could prove to be the perfect solution.
While the new report has to be taken with a pinch of salt, it would make sense that the PS5 VR would feature heavily in PlayStation’s future.
The original headset proved a solid seller on the PS4, and building on the existing customer base seems like a no-brainer.
It’s also an exclusive PlayStation console feature, with no headsets announced or seemingly planned for the Xbox Series X.
The Xbox Game Pass might provide a tidy library of games that can help kick off your new Xbox Series X experience, but it doesn’t contain any VR titles.
The report states that Sony has recently showcased its latest Virtual Reality tech to studios and has now locked in plans to push the envelope.
According to news shared via PushSquare, Sony is looking to create AAA gaming content for the PS5 VR.
This will mean moving away from the proof of concept demos and shorter games found on the PS4.
Upgrades made in the PS5 VR headset will make it possible to offer much-improved experiences.

This includes reported tech like foveated rendering, which will reportedly make it possible to track your eye movement to know where you’re looking and make it possible to push the most rendering power to that area.
But even with improved specs and power, there will still be difficulties with things like how long someone can stay immersed, alongside things like the weight of the headset.
From what has been shared this week, the PS5 VR will be revealed in 2022, making it the next big Sony hardware launch.
Rumours suggest that the PSVR 2 will be available to buy in late 2022, but it’s unclear at this point how global events could affect the rollout.
The second PlayStation VR headset was confirmed as real earlier this year, with Sony telling fans in February 2021:
“We’re continuing to innovate with our new VR system so that our fans can continue to enjoy the unique experiences that are synonymous with PlayStation.
“We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input. It will connect to PS5 with a single cord to simplify setup and improve ease-of-use, while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience.
“One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics. That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to match our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences.
“There’s still a lot of development underway for our new VR system, so it won’t be launching in 2021. But we wanted to provide this early update to our fans, as the development community has started to work on creating new worlds for you to explore in virtual reality.”
