Powerpuff Girls TV Show In Development At The CW From Jennifer’s Body Writer Diablo Cody
The Powerpuff Girls, the superhero sister troop of the late 90s, is getting a live-action reboot with a little help from writer Diablo Cody.
The Powerpuff Girls had it all, adorable animation, science, and actually good storylines. The story of a professor—although it’s unknown exactly what he’s a professor of—whose poor lab safety practices and set up result in the creation of a three-person super-powered crime-fighting team. Thanks to Professor Utonium’s concoction of sugar, spice, everything nice, and the accidental inclusion of Chemical X, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup burst forth into life, super powerful and ready to take action. The girls are spunky and peppy, ready to kick butt in pastels and knee-high socks, but that will not necessarily be the case for this live-action reboot.
Rather than remaining on Cartoon Network, this Powerpuff series will be coming to The CW, which means we can likely expect some more adult content. The new series will be written by Diablo Cody, whose style you will likely know from classic flicks like Juno, Jennifer’s Body, and Tully. Powerpuff Girls IRL will see the girls aged right along with their original fan base, putting them somewhere in their 20s and contemplating a comeback. The squad has been out of the game for a while, but a rise in crime and the forces of evil could just be the thing to draw them back into the game. Cody has produced some whip-smart stories with killer dialogue and compelling coming of age chronicles with unexpected twists, just what this cartoon need.
The Powerpuff Girls rose to near-immediate prominence after its first episode in 1998. This is a huge burst of nostalgia for millennials and given the fact that it’s coming to the network that did Riverdale, an edgy, live-action adaptation of the rather vanilla Archie Comics. Given what the CW has allowed happening under the name of Archie Comics, it’s not a far cry to theorize that Buttercup will have finally grown into her lesbian energy and Professor Utonium will be portrayed as a complete Zaddy.
