Madden NFL 21 has the lowest Metacritic user review score of all time
Madden NFL 21’s launch has become mired by a swarm of negative fan reviews encouraging others to not buy it.
When Madden NFL 20 launched last year it already seemed likely that long-time players would feel like they were paying £50 or more for glorified DLC.
And unfortunately it looks like lessons have not been learned for Madden NFL 21, which only launched today and yet already seems to have got fans even more angry.
The game has been bombarded with overwhelmingly negative user reviews on Metacritic. In fact, it now sports the lowest user review of any game on the site: a 0.4/100, an ‘honour’ only shared with The Division 2’s Warlords Of New York expansion.
While critics have been much kinder, the average score is still 63/100, making it the lowest scoring game in the series on Metacritic.
So, why are the fans upset? Judging by the hundreds of comments left on Metacritic it’s for a number of reasons.
Firstly, it’s apparently almost exactly the same game as Madden NFL 20, which was already very similar to its predecessor, right down to the menus and single-player story mode.
Not only that, but there are repeated complaints of bugs and glitches that affect both gameplay and visuals.
On 25 August, journalist Bryan Wiedey listed some of them on Twitter and even labelled it as the worst Madden game in 15 years.
An update has since gone out to address some of these issues, but the outrage stems from the fact that there were so many bugs and glitches to begin with.
One recurring positive is that the gameplay is improved, but even those that admit that are still outraged at everything else, with many requesting that no one buys the game.
Our own resident American football expert will offer his view when we have a review of the game early next week.
Madden NFL 21 is available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It will release on Stadia, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X later this year.
