Halo TV Series Scheduled To Debut In Early 2022
Halo, the highly anticipated live-action sci-fi series based on the Halo game franchise, will make its debut in early 2022 on Paramount+. The series, which focuses on the 26th-century war between the United Nations Space Command and the alien Covenant, stars Pablo Schreiber, Natascha McElhone, Charlie Murphy, Jen Taylor, Shabana Azmi and Bokeem Woodbine.
Produced by Showtime and Steven Spielberg production company Amblin Television, the show was originally set to be released in 2015. On June 28, 2018, a 10-episode series order was greenlit with Kyle Killen as the showrunner, writer and executive producer and Rupert Wyatt as director and executive producer. On December 3, 2018, Wyatt stepped down due to scheduling conflicts and was replaced by Otto Bathurst in February 2019.
In the series, Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, a towering supersoldier known as a Spartan, who will be played by Schreiber, will be the main lead of a new Halo story. He will be joined by McElhone as Dr. Catherine Halsey, a scientist for the UNSC, Murphy as Makee, Azmi as Admiral Margaret Parangosky, Woodbine as Soren-066, and Taylor as the voice of Cortana, an artificial intelligence construct.
Filming began in Budapest in early 2020, however it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The first five filmed episodes were re-edited during the shutdown, with production on the sixth episode and reshoots now being filmed in Ontario, Canada. So far, the show, which is expected to be the network’s “most ambitious series ever,” has spent over $40 million on production costs.
The original game, Halo: Combat Evolved, an FPS developed by Bungie and published by Microsoft Game Studios, was released as a launch title for Microsoft’s Xbox game console on November 15, 2001. An HD remake, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, was released for Xbox 360 on the 10th anniversary of the original game’s launch. Anniversary was re-released for Xbox One in 2014 and on Windows in March 2020 as part of Halo: The Master Chief Collection. The sixth main installment in the series, Halo Infinite, is due for release in fall of 2021.
