Final Fantasy 7 Remake & future Square Enix PC games to be £65
Square Enix is the latest publisher to hike up the prices of its games, with both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Forspoken going for £65.
Last year, ahead of the release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, several publishers said that they would be raising the price of their games. The likes of 2K and Activision bumped them up to £65, while Sony went even further and now sells first party PS5 games at £70.
Despite being an unpopular move it was grudgingly accepted by customers and so it became only a matter of time before others began to follow suit. So it’s not that much of a surprise to find that Square Enix has priced Forspoken and the PC release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake at £65/$70.
Fans had been waiting for Final Fantasy 7 Remake to make the jump to PC since it released in April 2020. A reference to it was found on the Epic Games Store back in June and it was officially announced during The Game Awards 2021. Although the news of its pricing, and the fact that it’s an Epic Games Store exclusive, has soured some fans.
Curiously, if you check its listing on the Epic Games Store, the pricing has been completely removed. There’s not even an option to pre-purchase the game, even though it’s out on Thursday, December 16.
The same can’t be said for Forspoken. Its listings on the Epic Games Store, Steam, and PlayStation Store all price it at £64.99, with the Digital Deluxe Edition at an even costlier £89.99.
It’s a pretty bold move by Square Enix, considering Forspoken is an entirely new property, meaning people are far less likely to check it out than they would a sequel in a long-running franchise like Final Fantasy.
The defence from publishers for these price hikes is that video games have become more expensive to make and haven’t had a price rise in several generations. As a result, publishers have tried to recoup more money through special editions and expensive DLC or microtransactions.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake doesn’t have any microtransactions though and, so far, there’s no sign of them for Forspoken either.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake releases for PC on December 16.
Forspoken releases for PlayStation 5 and PC on May 24.
