Cyberpunk 2077 breaks records to become fastest selling PC game ever
New statistics from CD Projekt reveal more than half of Cyberpunk 2077’s pre-orders were on PC, with 74% of all sales being digital copies.
Despite all the criticisms and controversies that surrounded it before launch, Cyberpunk 2077 was still expected to be one of the biggest game releases of 2020.
And now, only a day after said release, CD Projekt’s investor relations Twitter account has shared some stunning data concerning its launch.
Not only did pre-orders for the game reach 8 million, CD Projekt states that 59% of those pre-orders were for the PC version.
The previous record holder was World Of Warcraft: Shadowlands, the newest expansion for Blizzard’s MMO, which only set the record less than a week ago with 3.7 million copies sold at launch, according to GamesIndustry.biz.
As for the physical/digital split, 74% of units sold were digital, possibly because most players wanted to be able to play the game immediately, rather than wait for a physical copy to arrive in the post.
Cyberpunk 2077’s strong PC sales are likely due to it being the most optimal way to play it, with the console versions (particularly on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One S) becoming a source of mockery thanks to various performance issues.
CD Projekt also failed to show the game running on consoles until more than a few weeks before launch, which would have likely worried many potential customers.
Anyone who wants to best enjoy the game on consoles may want to hold off until the eventual PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions release in 2021.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Stadia.
