Mario has been in 256 games since 1981, when he made his first appearance in Donkey Kong. The Mario series, the best-selling video game franchise of all time, has generated billions of dollars in sales since it launched with Mario Bros. in 1983.

At least 31 Mario games have sold more than a million copies each since 1995, including the main Super Mario series, which has sold over 262 million units worldwide, as well as the Mario Kart series which sold 78 million units. In addition, the Mario Party series has sold over 32 million units.

Super Mario Bros. 35, an online multiplayer platformer with battle royale elements developed by Arika and published by Nintendo, was released last October to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the game. Available on Nintendo Switch as a free download for members of Nintendo Switch Online on October 1, the game will remain playable until March 31, 2021.

Mario will next be featured in Mario Golf: Super Rush, a golf game developed by Camelot Software Planning and produced by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch, which is set to be released on June 25. It will be the seventh installment in the Mario Golf series following Mario Golf: World Tour in 2014.

Although not officially announced, fans have noted that King Bob-omb, a boss battle that originally appeared in Super Mario 64, was unintentionally mentioned by Nintendo as a playable character in the game.

The MAR10 Day sale runs until March 13 at 11:59 PM PT / March 14 at 2:59 AM ET. Physical copies of the game are also being marked down at Amazon, Best Buy, and GameStop.
