As part of the deal, DreamHack Sports Games will produce the NHL Gaming World Championship, which is expected to launch in March 2021. The event is said to expand on previous iterations of the competition and will aim to ‘align’ more closely to the real-world action.

Chris Golier, Vice President of Business Development and Innovation at the NHL, spoke on the partnership in a release: “We have built a great base for competitive gaming at the NHL over the past three years and have seen our Gaming World Championship capture the attention of fans and gamers across the globe. This partnership with DreamHack Sports Games will help to strengthen our brand in the gaming ecosystem as they provide world-class production resources and longstanding relationships in the industry.”

Since the introduction of MTG’s business unit in December 2019, DreamHack Sports Games has launched the European eTour in partnership with the European Tour golf circuit and joined forces with eManager to create a FIFA esports fantasy game.

Roger Lodewick, CEO of DreamHack Sports Games, commented: “This cooperation with the NHL is a landmark moment for us. It is a confirmation of the innovative work everyone at DreamHack Sports Games has been doing in the Sport Gaming vertical. We’re genuinely proud and privileged to work with the NHL team to produce and jointly sell these amazing NHL esports properties.”

Esports Insider says: Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, more sporting leagues have utilised gaming and esports to provide some form of entertainment. As the leagues continue to see the benefits of being involved in esports, it’s no surprise to see the NHL get in on the act. For DreamHack Sports Games, it’s another impressive addition to an ever-expanding portfolio.
