Key EDward Gaming's players and coaches stranded at home due to coronavirus, unavailable for Spring Split

EDward Gaming confirmed Monday on Weibo that a large part of their starting roster will be unavailable for the LPL Spring Split, leaving the team with few viable options. A total of five players and coaches have been stranded in their own homes due to the coronavirus outbreak and are unable to join EDG in their headquarters to play out their LPL matches, including:

  • Lim “Jinoo” Jin-woo — Top
  • Zhao “Jiejie” Li-Jie — Jungle
  • Chang “Xinyi — Jungle
  • Ming “Clearlove” Kai — Head coach
  • Lee “Heart” Gwan-hyung — Coach

These are all critical positions within the EDG League of Legends team. Losing the two junglers leaves only sub Yu “JunJia” Chun-Chia as an option on that position, and this is a player who’s never played a single game on such a major stage, his entire career being spent in the ECS — the academy league of the now-defunct LMS.

In the top lane, EDG still have Zhao “Aodi” Ao-Di as an option, but there’s not much guidance the roster can get without its head coaches. Without Clearlove and Heart, only Cheng “CorGI” Pin-Lun (formerly of ECS’ ahq Fighters) remains.

With so many key figures missing, EDG have essentially thrown in the towel, admitting there’s not much they can do in the Spring Split.

“Our junglers are all stuck at home, and we only have JunJia as our foreign sub. Our top laner Jinoo can’t play on site either. We are severely impacted. Our coach isn’t able to return, and this basically means regrouping for EDG, so see you in the Summer Split. I don’t think we are ready for the “spring semester”, we’ll start in the “summer semester” and the Spring will be like a hospital for us.”

EDward Gaming’s first game after the long coronavirus break will be against Suning this Thursday, followed by a match against ranking leaders eStar on Saturday.
