EA Issues Statement Regarding Gaming/Esports Industry Abuse, Harassment, and Misconduct

Game publisher Electronic Arts has released a statement in response to the wave of stories coming from women within the gaming and esports space regarding their experiences with sexual misconduct and online or in-game harassment.

“These behaviors are never ok – not in our communities or any others,” the statement reads. EA then outlines several programs it has both internally and for its esports competitions, and encourages both employees and players to use its channels to report instances of harassment and abuse.

As was the case with the entertainment industry in recent years, women across esports and gaming have shared their personal experiences and made allegations against prominent figures within the industry over the last 10 days. The New York Times last week reported that more than 70 allegations had surfaced on social media in the first weekend of what has become gaming’s equivalent to Hollywood’s  #MeToo movement.
