Ahgren’s Pokémon Week has streamers opening 235,000 worth of cards

Over the years, classic Pokémon packs have steadily risen in price. Original sets like Base Set, Jungle, Fossil, and Team Rocket can cost collectors upwards of $900 for just one sealed pack. The staggering cost of these collectibles is what makes Twitch streamer Ludwig Ahgren’s pack opening event so wild. Ahgren has purchased hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of original Pokémon TCG boxes live on stream. Not only is Ahgren opening boxes, but six other streamers will be participating in the pack opening extravaganza.

The pack opening event, dubbed “Pokémon Week” by Ahgren, will feature fellow streamers ConnorEatsPants, MoistCr1TiKaL, Mizkif, Pokimane, Trainwreck, xQc. Karl Jacobs will also be joining Connor on his stream in cracking packs.

Pokémon week is shaping up to be an expensive week

Buying boxes is not cheap, partially with highly desired collector products. Ahgren says he spent $235,000, split across seven boxes. The most expensive box according to Ahgren is a first edition Neo Genesis box worth about $70k. Neo Genesis was the first set to introduce Pokémon from the Gold and Silver games. The set also introduced the Metal and Darkness Pokémon types to the TCG, along with Baby Pokémon.

Pokémon Week starts on December 7 at 4 PM PT, starting with Ahgren himself. Every day that week, a new partnered streamer will be opening a different box.

Pack openings have always been a huge subcategory of TCG streamers and YouTubers. With new products constantly releasing and older products climbing in rarity and price, it can draw thousands of viewers for the right packs. The thrill of potentially watching a high-value card get pulled and joining in the excitement or disappointment depending on what is opened is part of the fun. It all comes without the risk of not wasting your money or investments.
