Top New Video Game Releases On Switch, PS4, Xbox One, And PC This Month — April 2020

It’s crazy to think that we’re already a quarter of the way through 2020, and the new month has another batch of video games to feast on. April brings us some sizzling hot remakes: the survival horror outing Resident Evil 3, the sword-slashing tale of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and the reimagined retro RPG Trials of Mana. Movie fans can also get a taste of nostalgia with Predator: Hunting Grounds, and the Gears of War crowd gets a new strategy-heavy campaign with Gears Tactics.

Resident Evil 3 — April 3

Available on: PS4, Xbox One, PC

Resident Evil 3 is getting the same treatment as 2019’s Resident Evil 2 remake, which is appropriate since the two games overlap. RE 3 sees Jill Valentine exploring a zombie-filled Raccoon City, where she and other S.T.A.R.S. agents are being hunted down by the nasty Nemesis. That’s just the single-player component–this remake also includes Resident Evil Resistance, an asymmetrical multiplayer mode. Four players control survivors, while a fifth mastermind tries to take them out with zombies, Lickers, Tyrants, and all sorts of tricks and traps.

Final Fantasy VII Remake — April 10

Available on: PS4

Final Fantasy 7’s remake is also coming this month–well, part of it. This particular release only tells Cloud’s story through the Midgar story arc, but Square Enix says the side quests and other content still makes the game size comparable to that of other mainline Final Fantasy titles. Combat in the remake has also been reimagined. It plays out in real time, but when your ATB gauge fills, you can pause the action to select items, cast magic, and pull off special attacks.

Predator: Hunting Grounds — April 24

Available on: PS4, Xbox One, PC

Resident Evil 3 isn’t the only asymmetrical experience coming this month. Hunting Grounds pits four player-controlled soldiers against a lone Predator player. They can choose to hunt the fireteam as a Scout, Hunter, or Berserker Predator, each with their own abilities and alien weapons. The soldiers also have their own classes and loadouts, which they’ll need if they hope to complete their objectives and survive in the jungle.

Trials of Mana — April 24

Available on: PS4, PC, Switch

The original Trials of Mana first launched in 1995, but it never came to the West until recently. While the action-RPG has been fully recreated in 3D, you’ll still carry out battles in real time in the field. Trials features six characters, each with their own stories that weave together. You form a party of three at the start, so you’ll have to replay the adventure to see all parts of the story.

  • Trials Of Mana – 30 Mins Of Gameplay And Boss Fight
  • Trials Of Mana – Official Final Trailer

Gears Tactics — April 28

Available on: PC

Gears Tactics turns the Gears of War shooter formula into a tactics game, giving you a squad of customizable COGs who will carry out your orders against the Locust. It’s not just cannon fodder they’ll be facing, though: expect to encounter big Brumaks and Corpsers during the campaign too. Tactics is coming Game Pass for PC on launch day, but the Xbox One version will launch sometime later.

  • Gears Tactics Will Be Single-Player Only And Won’t Have Microtransactions

This episode of New Releases looks at April overall, but next time we’ll take a closer look at some weekly releases. The next episode will dive into some upcoming releases that shouldn’t slip under your radar, like Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories and the console release of Convoy: A Tactical Roguelike.

Windbound looks like a Moana-meets-Breath-of-the-Wild adventure

With a trailer evoking both Moana and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Deep Silver and Australia’s 5 Lives Studios announced Windbound for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. It launches Aug. 28.

In the game, a young warrior washes ashore on the mysterious Forbidden Islands, where she learns to craft, hunt, adapt, and survive. An accompanying release touted “an immersive sailing experience,” in the gameplay, as well as a procedurally generated world with a dynamic wildlife population.

Scattered about the islands are ruins whose secrets will reveal the lore behind Windbound. 5 Lives promises players will be able to “explore as far as the eye can see,” on a boat that can be custom crafted to suit their needs and playing style.

5 Lives Studios is the developer behind 2015’s Satellite Reign, a crowdfunded spiritual successor to the Syndicate series. (5 Lives’ staff includes alumni of that franchise.)

Sony Delays The Last Of Us 2 Indefinitely

Sony has announced it is delaying the launch of The Last of Us 2 indefinitely, saying in a tweet that the global crisis caused by the coronavirus is “preventing us from providing the launch experience our players deserve.”

Developer Naughty Dog issued its own statement on Twitter as well. In it, the studio said that while it’s in the final stretches of development, there are logistical issues that will prevent it from ensuring the best experience, including a simultaneous global launch.

“We were bummed about this decision but ultimately understood it’s what’s best and fair to all of our players,” the statement reads. “We’re hoping that this won’t be a long delay and we’ll update you as soon as we have new information to share.”

This follows another release date delay that had pushed the game’s release until May 2020, not long after it had been announced for February. (Prior to that, it was due out last year.) This latest delay has no release date attached, but unlike others, it’s not due to extra development time. Sony has previously said that the coronavirus pandemic shouldn’t impact the release of the PlayStation 5, which is also due this year. Presently, The Last of Us 2 is only slated for release on PS4.

The announcement from Sony also noted that Marvel’s Iron Man VR is similarly delayed until further notice.

Overwatch heroes are wearing googly eyes

Players who load up Blizzard’s hero shooter Overwatch may notice a big surprise. Well, two, to be exact. Each hero is wearing googly eyes, which comically roll around. Now, players can enter their hero gallery to watch the much-improved Play of the Game intros, or load into a game full of eager-eyed enemies.

For instance, logging in, players can see the new Thunder Doomfist skin… along with a pair of perfectly posed googly eyes. Ana and Torbjorn, the two characters with eyepatches, only have one googly eye applied. Winston’s googly eyes are tucked behind his glasses. It’s a series of nice little touches that I appreciate, and it’s surprisingly fun to just watch the new cinematic intros with those comical eyes bobbing and flailing about.

Also, Hanzo’s dragons wear googly eyes, and that’s great.

There’s just a few problems. Ashe’s robot butler companion, BOB, doesn’t have an extra set of eyes propped up above his mustache. Zenyatta only has two googly eyes over his chassis’ face, and not a grid of nine small googly eyes above that. D.Va is wearing eyes, but her MEKA doesn’t have a giant pair on the sides like hubcaps.

Still, despite these small follies, the Overwatch April Fools’ Day prank is actually a pretty good one. It arrives a little early, so it’s not mixed in with a flood of other jokes, and it’s not a fake-out. Overall, I have to say I approve of this joke … even if it is a little cornea.
